SC urged to issue directions to protect elephant corridor
The Amicus Curiae examined the legal implications of several enactments before suggesting to the Supreme Court to consider demolishing all illegal hotels, lodges, resorts and buildings engaged in commercial activities in the notified elephant corridor in The Nilgiris.
The note was submitted to the court on writ petition (civil) No. 897 of 1996 in the matter of A. Rangarajan and Others vs Union of India and others, raising the important issue of protecting elephants and their corridors to reduce man-elephant conflict.
Dealing extensively with the writ petition (civil) number 10098 of 2008 filed in the Madras High Court and SLPs before the Supreme Court, which have been tagged along with the original writ petition No. 897, the Amicus Curiae requested the Supreme Court to consider seven directions to restore the most critical elephant corridor in the country.
